If you told me that I could only pick one brand to ever wear again, I would without hesitation choose Saint Laurent. So when Farfetch reached out and asked me to create a look centered around Yves Saint Laurent's infamous Smoking Jacket, I knew the task wouldn't be hard. Mixing classic with edgy, adding in a little rock-n-roll vibe, and utilising well tailored pieces creates the perfect look for any moment.
Yves Saint Laurent redefined couture in the 1960s by being the first French couturier to come out with a full-fledge prêt-à-porter (or ready to wear) line. Known most famously for his classic tuxedo look for women (aka the Le Smoking) he also popularized thigh high boots, tight and tailored trousers, and mainstreamed the idea of wearing silhouettes from the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Many of these traits are still incredibly in style today. Yves Saint Laurent passed away in 2008, and in March of 2012 Hedi Slimane left Dior and took over as creative director of Saint Laurent Paris and began redefining cool. He mixed LA rock-chic with the Parisian craft of YSL (much as Yves himself would have wanted) and created the looks so sought after today.
The pieces I've chosen for this look stay pretty true to my closet (for those of you who know me well, you'll be nodding along). Classic Hepburn-esque stripes, Kate Moss-cool leather, a structured and sleek bag, plus fun accessories (I can never say no to a good oversized hat). Topping the look off and pulling everything together - the infamous Smoking Jacket Yves himself made popular so many years ago.
Now tell me, what's your favorite classic style and favorite designer? I'd love to know!
