The Ulta Haul

Whenever I head home to Richmond one of my first stops is usually Ulta - much to my wallet's dismay. Since D.C. doesn't have an Ulta and my favorite brow artist works at the Benefit counter it usually becomes a rather splurgey trip. I love wandering through the long aisles and seeing what hard to come across nail shades they have in stock. This time around I had a few items on my list (thanks to Claire) so I was extra excited to make a quick stop in the other weekend.

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue : This item has been super hyped up in the blogging world and all of it's descriptions aligned with exactly what I look for in a base product. Lightweight, flawless coverage, good SPF, and a dewy finish. Overall the finish and formula is very pretty, however it doesn't seem to have the long-lasting power that my beloved Chanel CC Cream has. I find it transferring and "melting" throughout the day. I will say though - I have only been testing this on absurdly hot days (since DC is seeing a heat-wave reminiscent of late August in mid June). So I'm hoping once it cools I can find myself using this one a bit more. Since my Chanel CC Cream tends to stay put even on those 97 degree days I'll be sticking to it for a while.

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner : The one token Sephora buy in this post. Since my favorite Tom Ford liner is coming to it's end days, I snagged this after hearing Claire and Amelia rave about it. Upon first use I was a little let down. It was a bit streaky and not as jet black as I was used to...it also smeared a bit. I was super bummed because I love the brush - it's the most precise thing I've ever seen! I was wondering if maybe I got a bad tube and thought about swapping it out. However, after a few uses it began providing a much more pigmented finish that I am way more pleased with. Pros - the lid snaps shut so no drying out and the tip is so precise so it's easy to get a great cat flick. Cons - not quite as "tattoo" as I was hoping, my Tom Ford still wins for the longest lasting finish.

OPI 'Do You Take Lei Away' : I am on a major nude nail kick. I've bought a few shades recently but this one has to be my favorite. Its just that perfect neutral, neutral. It's not too pink or too grey. I also have been loving OPI lately (more than Essie), I'm finding the wider brush makes application super easy and quick.

It Cosmetics 'Bye, Bye Under Eye' : One that I am still on the fence about...I picked this up after hearing a co-worker rave about it since my NARS Creamy Radiant Concealer is almost out. I absolutely love the immediate finish this gives when applied in the morning however it tends to not wear as well throughout the day sadly. Again - it could be related to this ridiculous heat but still my NARS one seems to sit better. If any of you have any tips for better application of this guy, please let me know! Also, I'm thinking of scooping up the Tarte CC Under Eye concealer to try as well. Do any of you use that one?

Too Faced 'Primed & Poreless' : Another Claire influenced purchase! I have to be careful with powders since they can settle into my drier skin a bit oddly, but I've been liking this a lot for these hot sticky days. I tend to just dust a bit on my t-zone area to help things last a bit longer and not melt off.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush 'Exposed' : Probably my favorite purchase out of the bunch! This has been on my list for months and I just never picked it up for some reason. You know those products that are continuously on your list, you pick them up, put them back, and then just never buy them and instead by six other items? Well that was this for me and I am so happy to finally have this blush. It is a gorgeous rosy/neutral shade that goes with a bunch of looks. The finish is really pretty and can be built up really nicely.

Have you done any beauty buying lately? What have you been scooping up and loving? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Tarte Exposed is such a love in my make up collection. Great pick. I've also found the Kat Von D liner not to be very dark compared to others but I have tried the Ink liner and much preferred it. Definitely lasts for ages.

  3. Try setting the Complexion Rescue with a powder if you don't I find that helps a lot with the wear. I'm currently using the Charlotte Tilbury powder which is lovely. I also got the Too Faced powder cause of Claire but didn't go so well on me, I prefer my Chanel Les Beiges and the CT one. For the tattoo liner you need to shake it before use to get that jet black color, it was weird to me too at first :))

  4. I have to be careful with powders since my skin doesn't always take them well! I definitely did try powder after the first few days of testing the Complexion Rescue but I still had issues. (Like makeup coming off all over my phone for example after talking on it - something the Chanel doesn't do to me.) Shaking definitely helped the color of the tattoo liner! Have you discovered any ways to help keep it from fading and smudging during the day?

  5. I wish I loved it more!! This heat is just so unbearable and makes it melt off :/ I'm hoping once it cools I'll be able to use it more!
I definitely, definitely recommend the Tarte blush! I want to add about four more to my collection :)

  6. Ooh I'll have to look at the Ink liner! I prefer a brush tip compared to a felt tip most of the time, but I'll have to give the Kat Von D version a swatch!

  8. Hm that's weird cause I don't get makeup on me but maybe it's just the heat with you cause the product is hydrating so I can see that happening if it's really hot. The liner doesn't smudge on me which is rare cause everything does, could be just the heat?

  9. That's what I'm thinking. It's been consistently in the 90s with crazy humidity (which is nuts for June). It's just that sticky heat that's gross - and I walk everywhere. So I'm just chalking it up to all of that and will have to give this stuff a little more testing when the heat calms.

  11. I remember that feeling :)) I didn't want to wear makeup in Miami Beach cause I would look like a hot mess after 2h in the heat.

  20. I had the exact same experience with the Kat Von D liner, it's slowly becoming my favorite liner! I had some issues with the It cosmetics line, I used the Bye Bye Redness cream and it completely broke me out. It definitely scared me from trying their other products - but maybe your good experiences will convince me to give them another try!

  21. Tarte Exposed is so good! It's the first blush I reach for when I'm in a rush and need something I know will work with any makeup look.

  22. Definitely! They have so many pretty neutrals at the moment!

  23. The Kat Von D liner is growing on me the more I use it. It has definitely gotten darker and I'm hoping that the smudging stops as the heat cools! I can't recommend the Tarte blush enough!!

  24. Oh no :/ that's the worst when a product doesn't react well with your skin! The finish of the under eye concealer is really nice - however I just need to figure out how to get it to stay put!!

  25. It's the only one I've been wearing lately! It just works so, so well with everything!

  26. I'd love to say I'm on a nude nail kick now at the moment, but I ALWAYS am so it would be a big fat lie. I've been going through the same situation with Exposed but I think this will force me to pick it up finally, and I may slip that Too Faced powder in my basket too... You're such an enabler!!

  28. Really been wanting to try some Tarte blushes, it seems like everyone loves them.
Wish we had an Ulta down here in Australia...
